We All Float On: The Goodyear Blimp is Now Available to Fly in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024

The iconic Goodyear Blimp has arrived as a flyable aircraft in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Announced via Xbox Wire, the launch coincides with the release of World Update 22: US National Parks, which adds details for more than 30 U.S. National Parks and Monuments.

Jorg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, noted that the airship's addition aligns with broader thematic content in the update. "The inclusion of the Goodyear Blimp in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is perfectly timed – as we are celebrating the 250th birthday and the natural beauty of the United States with World Update 22," Neumann said. He added that "the famous Goodyear Blimp is the perfect aircraft to take in the stunning and varied landscapes of America as well as 36 of its National Parks from the skies."

Recreating the Wingfoot Two

The in-game aircraft models Goodyear's modern airship fleet, which relies on the semi-rigid Zeppelin New Technology (NT) design adopted in 2014. In the real world, these helium-filled airships span approximately 246 feet in length, seat up to 14 people in the gondola, and use three vectored-thrust engines paired with fly-by-wire controls. They carry a maximum speed of 73 mph, a range of 600 miles, and the capability to stay aloft for over 22 hours.

The digital recreation recreates specific elements from the real craft, including the exact exterior material textures and interior cockpit touches.

"The visuals look amazing! Wingfoot Two was captured exactly how it looks in real life, even including the LED sign computer keyboard in the left side pilot storage cubby," said Adam Basaran, Chief Pilot of Training & Safety Standards for Goodyear. Basaran highlighted that the simulator's visuals are close enough to real life "to use it to scout out unfamiliar event locations before flying them in the actual blimp."

Handling and Flight Dynamics

Flying an airship requires a shift in approach compared to conventional airplanes or helicopters. Because of its massive scale and unique physical dynamics, pilots must account for delayed responses to control inputs.

"The airship has a lot of mass compared to the amount of HP to move it. It’s close to 20,000 lbs. and has 600 total HP. There is a lag between control and engine imputes and seeing the ship respond so be patient," Basaran explained. "Think of flying the blimp like you would captaining a large ship on the ocean."

Basaran also emphasized the impact of environmental conditions on airship operation. "The wind makes a big difference when you’re operating an airship due to their relatively slow speed. Find the best altitude to maximize tail winds or minimize headwinds," he advised, adding that "there is no better way to see the world than by blimp. It will make simmers take their time and enjoy the journey."
