Square Enix Reveals the Bastion, Final Fantasy XIV's Newest Job, Coming in Evercold

Square Enix unveiled the first new job for Final Fantasy XIV's upcoming sixth expansion, Evercold, during the game's Fan Festival in Berlin. Named the Bastion, the class is designed as a main tank that enters combat wielding a pair of dual greatshields referred to in-game as "skyltborg."

Square Enix showcased the new job in action through a gameplay trailer at the event's keynote address, demonstrating how the defense-focused role operates on the front lines ahead of the expansion's planned launch in January 2027.

Dual Greatshields and Tank Mechanics

The Bastion introduces a distinct combat style centered on heavy frontline defense. Rather than using traditional melee weaponry or standard shield-and-sword combinations, the job relies on twin greatshields to absorb damage and manage enemy encounters.

During the Berlin presentation, Square Enix detailed the job as "a main tank that wields a pair of greatshields known as skyltborg—and unveiled a trailer showcasing the new job in action."

The Fourth and the Goddless Realms Saga

The job reveal served as part of a larger presentation covering Evercold, which initiates a brand-new narrative arc for the MMORPG following previous story chapters.

Square Enix presented an extended preview during the event, stating that "an extended teaser trailer for Evercold was also revealed, providing a glimpse into the world of the Fourth and the adventures that await the Warrior of Light in the start of the Goddless Realms Saga story arc." The new setting, known as the Fourth, will serve as the primary stage for players when the expansion arrives.

Evercold is scheduled to launch in January 2027 as the game's sixth full expansion, with confirmed platform support including Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2 platform alongside existing systems.
