French RPG developer Midgar Studio to shut down

French video game developer Midgar Studio has been ordered to liquidate by a French court. The studio's closure was publicly confirmed in a post on LinkedIn by Jérémy Zeler-Maury, the founder and former CEO of Midgar Studio, who also serves as the chief technology officer for publisher Nacon.

Midgar Studio, known for developing the Japanese-style role-playing game Edge of Eternity and working on its upcoming title Edge of Memories, was acquired by parent company Nacon in 2022.

Insolvency and Failed Acquisition

The court order comes amidst broader corporate financial turmoil at Nacon. As reported by RPG Site, parent company Nacon filed for insolvency in February 2026. Following that initial filing, several other studios and subsidiaries under the Nacon umbrella—including Cyanide, Kylotonn, and Spiders—filed for insolvency in March 2026.

The widespread insolvency proceedings have led to multiple closures within the publisher's network. Spiders, another French RPG development team owned by Nacon, previously shut down in April 2026.

Nacon attempted to sell Midgar Studio to an outside buyer before the court-ordered liquidation, but was unable to complete a transaction. Addresssing the studio's situation, Zeler-Maury noted, "Nacon hoped to find an acquirer for Midgar Studio, but was unable to do so in the proper timeframe."

Unresolved Status on Projects and Staff

Following the liquidation ruling, specific details regarding the status of Midgar Studio's employees have not been detailed. Furthermore, the future of the studio's upcoming game Edge of Memories, along with the intellectual property rights and distribution arrangements for Edge of Eternity, remain unconfirmed.
