Square Enix has clarified that promotional artwork released for Kingdom Hearts Collection 1-3 contained no generative AI materials, attributing the visual flaws that prompted online backlash to standard "human error."
The controversy began in June 2026 following the reveal of promotional key art for the upcoming collection, which is planned for release on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Shortly after the reveal, fans publicly questioned the legitimacy of the image, pointing out visual artifacts and suggesting the publisher had relied on generative software to produce or enhance the artwork.
Fan Backlash and Allegations
Following the art's reveal, fans voiced immediate concerns on social media regarding the image's quality and origins. Demonstrating the widespread suspicion, X user Vexmyx wrote directly to Square Enix, stating: "This appears Ai generated or Ai enhanced, can you make a statement regarding this? Very disappointed to see this."
Similar online reaction centered on visual inconsistencies in the art that mirrored common artifacts found in AI-generated imagery. Fans called on the publisher to address the issue directly, leading to official clarification from Square Enix.
Square Enix Denies Generative AI Use
In response to the growing speculation, Square Enix issued a statement to set the record straight regarding the development of the piece. As reported by IGN, the publisher confirmed that "the controversial key art for Kingdom Hearts Collection 1-3 did not contain any AI-generated materials and was actually the result of 'human error.'"
While Square Enix explicitly denied the use of generative AI software, the publisher did not elaborate on what the "human error" entailed. The company did not detail the precise mistakes made during the graphic design or editing pipeline, nor did it explain how those errors led to the specific visual artifacts that raised fan suspicions. Additionally, Square Enix has not confirmed whether the key art will be updated or replaced prior to the launch of Kingdom Hearts Collection 1-3.
