Stalker 2's Huge Free 2.0 Update and Its First Major Story Expansion Have a Joint Release Date

GSC Game World has announced a joint release date for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl's first major story expansion and its next massive free patch. Both the Cost of Hope expansion and the game's 2.0 update are set to launch on August 20, 2026, across PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.

Return to the Zone in Cost of Hope

Cost of Hope marks the first major narrative expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. Players will once again step into the boots of protagonist Skif after a mysterious PDA signal draws him into events running parallel to the main story.

According to the developer's official description, "The longstanding conflict between the Zone’s leading factions — Duty and Freedom — takes a dramatic turn. As tensions rise and the fragile peace between them begins to unravel, the fate of the Zone hangs in the balance." GSC Game World states that the expansion will pack "dozens of hours" of extra content.

Unreal Engine 5.5.4 Upgrade and Patch 2.0

Arriving alongside the expansion, the 2.0 update will be free to all base game owners. The primary highlight of the technical upgrade is a jump in core tech, shifting the game from Unreal Engine 5.1 to Unreal Engine 5.5.4. While GSC Game World has promised additional base game content and performance improvements within the patch, further specific details regarding the update remain limited.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl originally launched on PC and Xbox Series X/S in November 2024 before arriving on PlayStation 5 in November 2025, reaching over 6 million players since its debut.
